How We Met

August 2013

I remember it like it was yesterday. August 2013, we both arrived at Law school for orientation. Both nervous and oblivious of what was to come, yet happy and excited to tackle our first day. As instructed, all students funneled through the narrow doors, rushing to find seats. Per my usual sense of things, I was in no rush, so I allowed most to go in ahead of me. As it would happen, almost all seats in the back and front of the room were immediately taken. All but one. One seat next to a very focused, very quiet, sassy looking redhead. I didn't know it at the time and as fate would have it, I then chose to sit next to my future wife. As we sat, we engaged in small talk. We chatted about homework assignments as we waited for our professor's arrival. Interestingly, in my heart, I secretly felt that there was a bit more to our surface chat, or was I making stuff up in my head? Finally the moment of truth. The Professor blew through the door with an attitude three times larger than it's frame. She started calling on people randomly, asking entire rows to stand as she counted down the students to her next victim. All were terrified! After hearing several students get called on, and failing miserably at answering the Professor's questions, I felt a deep, uneasiness surround us. At that moment I leaned over to Toni and said, "GOOD LORD, out of everyone here, we look like the kind of people that would get called on." Toni stared at me with utter disbelief, soaking in the bad luck I just bestowed upon us. Immediately after speaking these foul words, the Professor told our row to stand and started counting down the row to choose the next speaker. A cold chill fell over us just as the Professor stopped at the student directly next to Toni. Without missing a beat, Toni looked at me and said, "I'm never sitting next to you again." Little did she know, that was an absolute lie. Luckily for me, It was. Loving where this pathway lead? Michael Mazzei II.

The Proposal

September 13, 2017

Ke makemakeʻoe i kahi hōkū.... It was hot and humid, possible the most humid day we had experienced so far on our trip in Hawaii. The kind of humid that a girl dreads because there weren't enough bobby pins or hairspray in the world to secure her hair. We were waiting to be seated for dinner. The hostess took us to our table and we all put our drink orders in, but before I had a chance to glance at the menu, Big Mike said that we are actually going to take some family photos before the sun went down. I immediately looked at my sister Cameron and asked her where she was gong to take them, she quickly replied she wasn't taking them. I turned back to Big Mike and asked if he was going to be the one to take them, he said no, but to be on the lookout for a man in a top hat. What? However, I said "OK" and like a nerd began looking for a man with a top hat. Before I knew it we were walking out to meet this photographer at the very end of our resort's beach. It was a beautiful area. We were on a small cliff with palm trees blowing, waves crashing below us and the sun setting behind us. Amidst the soft chatter of other people I hear " Ke makemakeʻoe i kahi hōkū". I turned around to see two Hawaiian performers singing a song that sounded so familiar but I was unable to name. But then the singer switch to English and the song started again, I immediately recognized what it was. It was When You Wish Upon A Star, a Disney classic that both Mikey and I love. From there Mikey pulled me away from everyone else and got on one knee and pulled his arm around to reveal a beautiful ring tied around a bride and groom Mickey and Minnie Mouse. He then asked " Will you be my bride?" and I immediately said yes!
