The most engrossing aspects of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" have nothing to do with the actual Hunger Games. They appear later, in part three of this lengthy prequel based on Suzanne Collins' 2020 novel.
A young Coriolanus Snow begins his rise to power in this frenetic state of flux. We know he eventually gets there, as played by a terrifying Donald Sutherland in the original films. But, in its grand gestures and small revelations, Tom Blyth's transformation into that tyrannical presidential persona is fascinating to watch. Snow transforms from a well-to-do pretty boy destined for entitled greatness to a shrewd manipulator intent on shaping his fate. It's a standout performance.
