The Proposal

7.25.2023

Matt and Stephanie were in Boulder Junction with Matt's family for the week during their annual Boettcher/Quinlan family vacation. Matt suggested going fishing on a remote, tiny lake named Flora, which happened to be Stephanie's favorite lake due to the abundance of constantly blooming lily pads. Stephanie agreed, and they headed out to the boat landing where Matt had originally planned to propose immediately. However, as is often the case, things didn't go exactly as planned. When they arrived, a maintenance/dock worker was busy with a motor, causing a change of plans. Matt decided to go fishing instead, and this nearly led to a major blunder during the proposal. He almost spoiled the surprise when he asked Stephanie to find pliers in his tacklebox (where he had hidden the ring). Fortunately, Stephanie didn't catch on, and they continued fishing for about an hour. Matt then suggested they return to the boat landing to head back in for lunch. Stephanie found it a bit unusual, as Matt typically wanted to fish for hours and needed convincing to leave the lake. Nonetheless, she happily agreed since she had forgotten sunscreen and was ready to head back. Approaching the dock, Matt suggested taking their usual selfie, a tradition during their annual family vacation. Setting up his phone on the tackle box with the help of his Apple Watch, they took a couple of normal photos. After the second photo, Matt proposed they take a third one. Stephanie, thinking the first two were likely sufficient, suggested reviewing them before taking more. However, Matt insisted on "just one more" and began fidgeting with his fanny pack (yes, he proposed while wearing a fanny pack). Suddenly, Stephanie realized what was happening and asked, "Is this it? Are you proposing?" Matt proceeded to deliver a romantic speech (of which Stephanie only retained fragments) that included references to Stephanie being the catch of a lifetime and needing shiny bait. Before she knew it, he was down on one knee. In a surprising turn of events, Matt managed to stay composed throughout the entire proposal and took photos from his Apple Watch, which have become some of Stephanie's most cherished photos. It truly turned out to be a magical moment and the best experience for both of them.
