Teresa never dreamed that she’d be placed in the remote Eastern Cape town when she marked it as her very last choice for her community service placement selection. But fate had other plans in store, as evidenced by the clearly marked ELLIOT on her response form. What do people do in Elliot? Not fall in love, surely? Andries, the dashing small-town local, had long accepted that he was going to be the eternal bachelor of Elliot. But alas, fate had other plans in store. He’d heard the rumours of a new girl in town, and he just happened to know where to find her…staying with his best man’s aunty, what luck! It was love at first sight for Andries and it wasn’t long before he started making regular visits to Aunty B’s Wednesday and Friday braai nights. Teresa found herself charmed by Andries’ jokes and infectious laughter, and slowly discovered a growing love for him. Now the couple will tell you they love each other equally… but he’ll profess he loved her first.
A long-distance relationship, sprinkled with weekends away, special holidays and many many kilometres travelled ensued. In fact, it was while travelling to see her special guy that Teresa was abruptly stopped and pulled off the road. Being the law-abiding citizen she is, Teresa had been sure to stop dead at the regional road junction outside of Elliot (she may have also noticed the traffic officer’s car parked across the road on her way in). As she pulled off, and to her surprise, the officer gave chase- lights, sirens and all! When she pulled over and asked the officer what the problem was, he insisted she hadn’t stopped at the junction and he’d need to return to his vehicle to write out a rather hefty fine. Teresa was riled up and too distracted to see Andries get out of the officer’s car. Instead of the officer, it was her special guy who returned to her car, opened her door, went down on one knee and offered her a written fine for 'stealing his heart' with a payable amount of 'a lifetime of love together', paired with her engagement ring. She said YES and, as they say, the rest is history
