We met in 2006, during our Junior year attending Standley Lake High School in Westminster, Colorado. I (Emily) was taking a class to become a peer counselor and met Jonathan through friends in that class. We actually went on one date our senior year, but it just wasn’t our time. We both graduated in 2007 and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. After not doing so well in my first attempt at taking Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology my freshman year, and Jonathan changing his major, we found ourselves taking that class together in the Fall of 2008. We would meet up every Wednesday at the Starbucks in Barnes in Noble in Westminster, the day before our weekly homework was due, and go through our problem set together. I consider that to be when we started to become best friends. Things stayed plutonic throughout college, and it wasn’t until several months after I graduated in May 2012 that we started to fall for each other. I invited him to a friend’s birthday party, and that ended up becoming our second date. We moved into our first apartment together in 2014 in Boulder, Colorado. We adopted our first kitty, Lumen, in April 2015. We bought our first house in Westminster, Colorado in 2018. On May 27, 2019, a few days after bringing home our second kitty, Chico, Jon and I were at my mom’s house in Longmont, Colorado, while my twin sister, Chloe, was home for a visit. It had been cloudy all afternoon, but suddenly, there was a break in the clouds. My sister and I were in the backyard, when I noticed Jon was inside the house, wearing a different shirt, and my mom was walking behind him with her phone out. He asked me to get up from my chair, and I was starting to figure out what was going on. He cut straight to the chase (probably from a combination of nerves and wanting the sun to stay out) and got on one knee, and asked me to marry him. We celebrated our 10 year anniversary in September 2022, and we feel so grateful for all of life’s events to have brought us to where we are today, and for the future we get to spend together.
