How We Met

The setting

We first met in 2017 at a headache conference at The Grand Floridian in Disney.

The beginning

(Mike's version)

When I first saw Sydney I was trying to figure out who this stunningly beautiful girl was, and what she was doing at a headache conference. Once I realized she worked with someone I knew, I saw my chance to see if she was as beautiful in person as she was from afar. She was wearing this blue dress that matched her eyes, and I knew it was someone I wouldn't forget.

The beginning

(Syd's version)

The first time I was introduced to Michael, I remember thinking about how handsome he was, but what I remember the most is how much I smiled the whole time during our first interaction. Honestly, that was a common theme throughout all of the other times we ran into each other as well. I was immediately drawn to his personality. I definitely felt butterflies each time we spoke from then on. It was embarrassingly evident, especially to my old colleagues, that I always preferred going to headache conferences and looked forward to the possibility of running into him.

The Proposal

From a LinkedIn message to dating long distance during COVID to Sydney moving to Tampa to being fur-parents to two pups, it all led to this:

Backstory from Sydney: We had planned to spend Thanksgiving visiting my family in Indiana this past year. My mom wanted to have a "celebration dinner" in Indianapolis the day after Thanksgiving because she, myself, and Michael all had recently started new positions within the past month or so. While I thought that was an interesting plan, I didn’t know it wasn’t my mom’s plan at all! We were visiting my family in Indiana for Thanksgiving and made a little trip out of it. We flew into Chicago, went shopping, and went to Doc B’s, one of our favorite restaurants. We drove down to Galveston shortly after lunch and spent the next day celebrating Thanksgiving. My mom and I went to get our nails done that next morning and Michael wanted to stay behind at my family’s house to relax a bit. When we got back home and I got ready for our “celebration” dinner, Michael said he was getting a call from The Lodge (our dog's boarding) and needed to step outside. A few minutes later, he tapped on the window telling me to come outside with him. I grabbed a coat quickly worrying that something had happened with Gideon (he has personality issues). He tried to motion to get me out further in the grass to which I shook my head no having heeled boots on. Ladies, I know you get it! I could tell that Michael was almost in tears and so I ventured out to where he was to see what was happening. I was absolutely convinced that Gideon had gotten kicked out of The Lodge. After a few moments of listening to him speak, I realized that that it was all a ploy for our proposal. The complete joy and excitement I felt was consuming. Our new position celebration dinner revealed to be our engagement celebration with my family.
