Santorini International Airport (JTR)

Santorini (Thira) International Airport (JTR) is an airport in Santorini/Thira, Greece. It is located north of the village of Kamari. The airport is a 10 minute drive from our wedding venue. There are currently no direct flights to Santorini (JTR), therefore it is best if you fly into any of the following cities and catch a connecting flight from there: Athens, Greece (ATH) - Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour Frankfurt, Germany (FRA) - 3 hours London, UK (LHW or LGW) - Approximately 4 hours Milan, Italy (MXP) - 2 hr 40 minutes Paris, France (ORY) - 3 hr 25 minutes Rome, Italy (FCO) - 2 hr 10 minutes Santorini has a special Airport Express Bus which runs a direct route to Fira (10 minute drive). You will find the bus stop just outside of the arrivals area of the airport and you can easily purchase tickets on the bus (cash only in euros - approximately €1.80). It is important to note that the Airport Express Bus only runs during the day, but there is another route that runs from Monolithos to Fira, stopping at the airport.

Information

The best way to get around Santorini is by: renting a car (recommended), local bus (KTEL), local taxi (less than 30 on the island with no meters therefore negotiate a set price before hopping on), ATV/quad or motorbike. There are currently no rideshares (Uber & Lyft) on the island. The main bus station is at Fira, where all local buses depart and arrive. This is where you will find the most available information on time schedules and available routes. Tickets must be purchased from your driver before departure and paid in cash (Euro). There are no daily passes or tickets so you'll have to buy individual tickets per journey.

Best Areas to Stay in Santorini

Fira: The capital of Santorini and the largest town on the island. It is centrally located and would be the best option if you do not have a car and intend on using public transportation since the main bus terminal is located here. It offers luxurious facilities, vivid nightlife, high-caliber food, and convenient public transportation. The main disadvantage of staying here is the crowds. In addition to the tourists who are already on the island, loads of visitors arrive daily from cruise ships (the cruise port terminal is also located here). Oia (pronounced ee'yah): The most popular town on the island with the infamous whitewashed houses and blue domed churches. It is Santorini's second largest town. Staying in Oia is a bit like staying in Fira, the streets are full of tourists which sometimes make it hard to walk, especially near the iconic photo spots. It is located on the northwestern tip of Santorini which makes it more difficult to access the rest of the island. It is a 25 minute drive to Fira and the airport. Firostefani: A quiet little town with good hotels, restaurants and shops. The greatest thing about staying here is how close it is from Fira. It is only a 10 minute walk and yet it is not nearly as crowded as Fira or Oia. You can take advantage of Firostefani's location by walking to other villages. If you don't want to rent a car, you can catch a bus on the main street or even walk to the main bus terminal in Fira. Imerovigli: Known as the balcony to the Aegean sea and located north of the island. Imerovigli was built on the highest point of the caldera cliffs, about 300 meters above sea level. Accommodation here tends to be more expensive and you will need a car because it is located about a 30 minute walk from Fira. If you plan on using transportation, you may have to change buses at the main terminal. Also bear in mind that most hotels in Imerovigli do not have parking lots so finding a parking space might be challenging.

House Or Rental

Airbnb

Most Airbnb's in Santorini are also listed on Booking.com and might cost you less since they don't charge any additional fees and you don't have to wait for a confirmation by the host.

Travel Note

Taxis

Due to the low number of taxis (around 30 or less) in Santorini, getting a cab can be a little difficult and slow. There are no taximeters therefore please negotiate a set rate before hopping on. Keep in mind that traveling to and from the airport or port may be a little more expensive and prices increase in the evening and again after midnight.
