Stephen and Deneese were undergraduates at Texas A&M University and Texas Woman's University during the late 60s and early 70s. When they first met, Stephen was a junior at TAMU and an ex-Aggie band member who was majoring in psychology while Deneese was a first-year, elementary education major at TWU. When Stephen first saw Deneese, while visiting the TWU campus, she was exiting the student cafeteria. They eventually made eye contact when Deneese heard an intentionally loud comment from Stephen: "Looks like somebody's little sister is visiting on campus today." This, of course, infuriated her as she thought he was being very rude and arrogant. Ignoring his demeaning comment, she just decided to engage in a exchange of names, graduation year classifications, degree majors, and other typical surface chat. As the evening was extended, Deneese was invited by Stephen to take a walk to a nearby campus ice cream parlor and, against her ambivalent feelings, accepted his invitation. Much to her surprise, she then realized that she actually enjoyed conversing with him. They seemed to have many things in common and, contrary to what she had previously assessed, he was a really nice guy and quite a gentleman. So, as their evening ended, they decided to exchange university post office mailbox numbers to communicate further through letter writing. Thus began their journey of a lifetime...
