Joya and Stephanie have known each other for over 15 years but if you ask them, it feels like longer. They met doing one of their favorite things…karaoke and their friendship blossomed quickly from there. From hour’s long conversations, miles and miles of skiing and traveling around the world together, it’s safe to say Joya knows Stephanie like a sister. I love Joya for her witty sense of humor, infectious smile, and thoughtful advice.

I am Melissa “Melly” Wong, and my real life didn’t begin until I met Stephanie at the 7 Year Med (SMED) orientation at BU undergraduate college. Finally, I had a partner in crime who could truly be nerdy in a time before it was hip, while also learning how to rebel, like the time we almost get written up in a dormitory for laughing too loudly while reenacting Will Ferrell SNL dance skits. We became sisters, from suffering through college and med school! While some friends came and went, Stephanie “Pephie” Gan is the true type of friend who would walk from the Esplanade to the North End at 9 o’clock on a Tuesday to try a new restaurant with me. We grew up together in our 20s, and when we separated in our 30s to pursue our careers, one constant in my life was knowing that I had a sister in Chicago to whom I could confide anything, and who loved me, despite the fact that my dance moves have not improved very much in the last 22 years. Regretfully, she will see that fact on the dance floor at her wedding. Cheers to happiness and healthiness, and to lifelong friendships!

Theresa and Stephanie met as freshmen and fellow Midwesterners in the same medical program in college. Theresa was intrigued by the girl from Chicago who would eat large plates of salad without dressing. She’s come to know many more of Stephanie’s lovable quirks over the years through med school, nights out, ski trips, and weekly phone calls. If there’s anyone Theresa would want to walk 100 blocks with from downtown to uptown NYC (before they learned to use the subway), it’s Stephanie.
