The day it was a done deal

Everyone likes Tacos

After being together for about a month I finally told Brookelynn I had a boyfriend and that I thought he was really good guy. I told her he was nice and funny and he cared for me and I thought she would like him. A few days later it was Cinco De Mayo and Brookelynn agreed we should get tacos, this wasn’t her only idea for the night though. She then threw out that we should invite mommy’s boyfriend because “everyone likes tacos”. This was still early in our relationship so I left it up to Cody with the knowledge that if tonight was too early it isn’t a deal breaker and we would just continue on in our child free bubble when she was with my mom. Cody ended our call saying he wanted to think about it since this was such a big step, there’s really no going back once a child is involved. After only 20 minutes he called me back and said “I’m on my way.” When he arrived an hour later to my small studio in Ukiah, Brookelynn was happy to meet him but more excited to have tacos, she gestured for him to sit right next to her and we passed around the salsa. Seeing them interact made it abundantly clear that this man was in it for the long haul. Things felt very fast but that’s because the feeling were obvious and we weren’t going to let any of it slip by. We embraced the uncomfortable conversations and grew together as a result, like I said once a kid is involved there’s no going back. Shortly thereafter Brookelynn called him dad for the first time and we went with it. Never forcing her to call him anything but not correcting her either. What was a simple taco night turned into the first REAL start in our relationship.
