Like many couples in our generation, Austin and I met through social media. Not the most romantic “meet-cute” story, but after messaging back and forth for several weeks, we planned our first date. He came and picked me up in his powder blue Jeep, doors off and all (as I had requested). We first stopped at Starbucks for a coffee, (both of us got Iced Caramel Macchiatos) then drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and set up a hammock at Raven’s Roost Overlook. We sat for a few hours watching the gorgeous sunset on the mountain together, just talking and getting to know each other. Once it had gotten dark, we climbed into the Jeep and headed back to Austin's house. Halfway home, both of us were shivering from the cold mountain air, and I instantly regretted asking him to take the doors off the Jeep that day. However, like the gentleman he was, he gave me his jacket to wear until we got back. To this day, the jacket is still hanging in my closet and it always reminds me of our first date and the way he made me feel that night. It is one of my favorite memories to look back on throughout our relationship, and little did I know that I was going to marry the boy in the powder blue Jeep.
What I thought was just a regular old Sunday turned out to be the day I said yes to the man I have prayed for. To set the stage, Austin had our engagement planned for quite some time, but all the while he fooled me into thinking it wasn't happening for at least another 6 months to a year. The week prior, Austin came to my house to ask my dad for permission to marry me. I later found out that I was home during their talk and didn't even know! The weekend rolled around and Austin's plan was to re-create our first date and propose at Raven's Roost overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He told me that he was going to take me to look at Christmas lights on Sunday evening. I didn't really suspect anything more than that, so I happily agreed and was just excited to spend time together. On Sunday, we carried on with our usual routine of attending church and going out for lunch. After we finished eating, Austin told me that he had some Christmas shopping to finish up. He dropped me off at home, then came back over later to pick me up for our Christmas light date. To begin the re-creation of our first date, Austin took us to Starbucks for coffee. The first detail I missed was that he ordered the same exact drink that he got on our first date, which he never orders usually. We then headed out towards the Buffalo Gap area, admiring the light displays as we drove along. As the second part of Austin's plan, he suggested going up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I, yet again missing the clue, agreed and we made our way to the parkway entrance off of Reed's Gap. Once we got to the top, we saw that the parkway had been blocked off from the winter weather we got on the previous weekend. After that, I suggested going home, not knowing what Austin had planned for us that night. He decided to take us to the other parkway entrance near Swannanoa, hoping he would be able to propose at Raven's Roost where we had our first date. To our misfortune, the parkway was blocked from that end as well. Austin then decided to look for a scenic spot where he could pull over and propose. We began driving back down the road and I couldn't figure out why Austin kept pulling over and getting out of the truck. It was freezing cold that night, so I stayed in the truck where it was warm. After several more attempts to get me out of the truck so he could propose, Austin came to the conclusion that I just wasn't going to cooperate. We ended up on Afton Overlook just off exit 99, and there was a beautiful view of the stars and the lights from the town below. He pulled the truck over and tried one more time to get me out. I finally decided to step out and walked around to stand with him while we watched the stars. I turned away briefly, and Austin started to kneel down as my back was turned. He quickly stood back up in fear that I would see him, as he said I turned back to him suddenly, at risk of spoiling the moment. I quickly ran back to the truck since it was too cold, and at that point, Austin decided there was only one thing left he could do to surprise me. He pulled the truck up to a secluded area, and as I looked out the window, he pulled the ring out behind me and said "I have a question for you...". I turned around and saw a glimpse of the ring in the corner of my eye. For some reason, I thought it was just him pranking me until I actually looked at the ring. It was more beautiful than I ever imagined. He had the biggest smile on his face, knowing he had me fooled the whole night. He asked me to marry him, and out of pure shock, my eyes welled up and I put my arms around him. I caught myself almost reaching to put the ring on myself but stopped and let him put it on my finger. We got out of the truck and embraced. It was such a memorable night and I will never forget it and all the detail Austin put into it. It was truly so special, and the way it all played out fits our relationship so well.
