The Gravitational Pull

“One single thread of gold tied me to you”

We started working together in March 2023. The first day we had a shift together, our lunch breaks were scheduled at the same time. There was a fun group of people in that room who filled the space with laughter and questionable conversations; and in the middle of all the chaos, the room felt silent and empty when our eyes met for the first time. Although this was the first time we met, this was not the first time our paths had crossed. There were multiple instances where we were in the same place at the same time just mere feet away from each other, in fact, there’s a picture in Sonia’s camera roll of the back of Julie’s head from one of these times. Our threads began weaving before we even knew each other. Once we started seeing each other at work on a somewhat regular basis, our infatuation grew stronger for one another. So much so that we both would both look at the staff log at the beginning of our shifts to see if we were going to work together. This pining went on for 7 months, but it never felt like a cute little crush. It was like gravity itself was pulling us closer and closer everyday until there was no space between us anymore. The gravitational pull was so strong that we would always end up in the same spot at work whenever we worked the same shifts, Sonia stocking the egg case and Julie stocking the carrots and celery in the produce wall, and it happened so many times that Sonia began trying to make conversation. Even with minimal interaction, and Julie’s reluctant energy to maintain a conversation, we could not stop the curiosity we had for one another. In some of our brief chats, Sonia discovered that Julie has a love for hiking and being outdoors, but was really missing the scenery of the Pacific Northwest where she grew up and felt as though there weren’t places to find that peace here in L.A. With that information, Sonia took it upon herself to begin trying to schedule group hikes in order to help Julie find some serenity here and hopefully get to know her better. The group was just an excuse. In October 2023, Julie was getting ready to celebrate her birthday when Sonia’s attempts to talk to her became more consistent and perhaps persistent. Slowly, Julie began to open up to Sonia by the time Halloween rolled around. We began texting and scheduled our first hangout which lasted 8 hours. (Incredibly lesbian of us.) We talked a lot more often after that, scheduling a birthday brunch and a concert together. November 1st was the birthday brunch where it started to become apparent that we were getting dressed up and putting effort into our appearance for one another. Things began to escalate exponentially from this point. November 3rd was the concert we talked about going to together but we were “leaving it up to fate.” Sonia was scheduled to work that night and had posted her shift in advance so that she could go, but no one took it. Julie tried to convince her to call out, but fate had other plans. She went to work but started to feel ill in her shift and got the approval to leave early and decided to go to the concert. She picked Julie up at 7 and they made their way to the venue. Waiting for the concert to begin, we inched closer and closer to each other. Soon our bodies were pressed together, dancing to the music. During one of the songs, Sonia worked up the courage to whisper the lyrics in Julie’s ear that said, “I’ll be your man.” After the concert ended, Julie confessed her feelings for Sonia in the car on the drive home, and Sonia did the same. We parked the car on a dimly lit street in Toluca Lake where we shared the most magical first kiss anyone could experience. Gravity pulled us together, our threads tied us together as one; a kiss so explosive that in that moment Julie knew she had just kissed her wife. We made our relationship official on November 7th, 2023, and have been together every day since November 1st. This love is the kind made for movie screens.
