In Vietnamese culture, wedding gifts are made in the form of money (cash or checks) inside an envelope. It symbolizes prosperity, health, and happiness, and actual gifts are discouraged.
During dinner service, the bride and groom "chào bàn" (table greetings), which is the customary process of going from table to table to personally thank guests for their well wishes and to collect envelopes. This is also a time for each table to select a representative to give a quick congratulatory toast to the bride and groom.
