The malecon is the main boardwalk along the ocean in the center of Puerto Vallarta. Along the Malecon, vendors set up stalls selling everything from street food to souvenirs. There are gorgeous statues and a central square which always seems to boast some sort of celebration. A walk along the Malecon during sunset is a must-do as it's a vibrant time of day and the sunsets are spectacular!
Enjoy a more remote beach experience where you share the turquoise water with few others. You can head here on a water taxi, but the beach is also connected to a memorable two-hour hike. Walk along the side of a coastal mountain, with amazing views and untouched coves that are serene settings for a welcome rest.
Pancho’s Takos is a local favorite — and considered by some to have the best Mexican food in Puerto Vallarta. In fact, you might want to consider arriving when they open, as the line gets long. Even if you don’t, it’s worth the wait for this delicious food. This small restaurant specializes in tacos al pastor (marinated pork cooked on a spit) and volcanes (crispy tortillas topped with melted cheese and meat).
Start at Monzon Brewing where you'll find IPAs, blondes, and some other unique craft beer styles. They have a great food menu and beers are available to go to take to the beach. Walk one block up and one block over and you'll stumble upon Los Muertos Brewing. In business since November 2012, this is PVs first craft brewery. There are 10-15 beers on tap including their classics (ales, IPAs, stouts) and other seasonal varieties. Walk 13 mins north and you'll find Yambak Brewing which offers great craft beer, music, pizzas, and a rooftop terrace overlooking downtown Puerto Vallarta.
Take a step back in time and experience the very heart and soul of the original Puerto Vallarta. The Zona Romantica is the city's historic district, and is one of the most visually pleasing parts of the city. Cobblestone streets and alleys are flanked with historic buildings, each capped with the trademark red-tile roofs. Purple bougainvillea blossoms arch over side streets, creating brilliant pops of color.
The Rhythms of the Night show is the most highly rated show in all of Puerto Vallarta. It was actually conceived by the co-founder of Cirque de Soleil, so it is an impressive combination of acrobatics, theatrics, music, and dance. However, it also has a Mexican spin on telling historical legends and stories.
Mirador de la Cruz is the absolute best viewpoint in Puerto Vallarta. The hike starts at the foothills just outside of downtown and there are signs along the way. Just head to the end of Abasolo Street and you will see the stairs. The hike will take just about 15 minutes, but you’ll definitely want to take some time at the top to enjoy the panoramic views over Puerto Vallarta and the ocean.
Visiting the botanical garden is one of the best ways to enjoy the flora and fauna of Puerto Vallarta. The gardens are actually privately owned and were set up to showcase the diversity of the region and to protect it.
This outdoor mercado (market) has the best shopping in Puerto Vallarta to buy souvenirs and gifts to bring home. The Río Cuale (Cuale River) runs down the center of town, and separates the Zona Romantica from Centro near the Malecon.
When it comes to a sensational vacation, look no further than Vista Vallarta Club de Golf. Here, two 18-hole courses provide incredible golf experiences with dense jungles, deep ravines, swift creeks and views of Banderas Bay for an extraordinary experience you won't soon forget.
