Day 1 - Colorful Cocktail / Indian Day 2 - Formal / Formal Indian Guidelines: fun and bright colors are strongly recommended. For dresses or Indian outfits, we ask that you DON'T wear black, white or red and please no khakis or jeans.
A saree (also known as sari) is an un-stitched stretch of woven fabric arranged over the body as a robe, with one end tucked into the waist, while the other end wraps around the body and rests over one shoulder as a shawl sometimes baring the midriff. A saree is worn with a cropped styled top which is partially covered by the rest of the fabric. A lehnga is an full-length skirt that is worn with a cropped styled blouse. A lehnga outfit is often accompanied by a dupatta (or scarf) that you can drape across the body. Both options come in a multitude of colors, fabrics and patterns and are great attire options for the wedding.
Not to worry! There are also full length dresses and kurtas (a long and loose style tunic that goes to your knees) that are great options as well. While browsing you'll come across these styles, but you can search for "full length Indian dresses", "kurta", and " Indian pant suits". There are also a lot of "fusion" outfits that are fun combinations of crop tops, skirts, pants and more. For this, you'll want to search for "Indo-Western attire". Feel free to browse and wear what represents you best. If you have questions and aren't sure if your outfit will work, please feel free to reach out to Selena. This part should be fun :) !
For men, you have options of a Sherwani or Kurta. A Shivani is a coat like garment typically made of a heavier fabric. A Kurta, as described above is made of a lighter fabric with a collarless neckline and tunic silhouette. Both can be worn with either loose trousers called Shalwars or tighter pants called Churidars. Dress pants you may already own will work great but for the wedding, we do ask that you do NOT wear jeans.
Of course you are more than welcome to purchase your outfits but there are also some great Indian Clothing rental companies out there. Below is a list of links of where to buy or rent outfits. If you're located in the DMV, I will list places you can go in person if that's easier for you. I also encourage borrowing from a friends who may already have Indian clothes.
