There are a ton of flight options to Kailua-Kona (KOA) on the Big Island. Our best flights have been the ones with 1 layover. From Grand Rapids (GRR) United Airlines through Denver (DEN) on to Kailua-Kona (KOA) makes for an enjoyable flight. On the way back, keep in mind, your flight will or should be overnight.
Rental Car

For all car rental companies on the Big Island it is good to have their App downloaded, and if they have a fast track system, join it. You can usually avoid the lines, often an hour long, with these Apps, or fast track programs. Budget has a program called “Budget Fastbreak” and they have a special line for it. Other companies have them too… it’s worth getting ahead of it, especially after a long flight. Send one person for the car while everyone else waits for their luggage. The car rental counters are served by a shuttle that picks up right outside baggage claim. Our favorite rental: Standard Recreational Vehicle Jeep Wrangler 4-Door
