How It All Began

November 6th, 2021, a day that Savannah and Dewayne's lives were changed forever. It started when their roommates, Caitlin and Clayton, got married to each other. See the running joke was that Clayton was going to set Caitlin's single roommates up with one of the groomsman at the wedding. Dewayne heard these jokes throughout the day and didn't think anything of it, until after the wedding ceremony, when he pulled Clayton aside to ask which girls in the crowd were Caitlin's roommates. As the reception kicked off Dewayne and Savannah ate, danced, and hung out with their people, until the DJ started to play the slow songs. Dewayne had stepped off the dance floor to grab a drink and Savannah stood on the edge of the dance floor watching all the couples dance, when suddenly she saw the bride and groom pointing behind her and toward her yelling something over the music. It was kind of like one of those moments in a movie where time stands still and everyone is trying to figure out what is happening because she looked at them and then looked behind her to see a handsome groomsman, looking equally confused as she was as to why the bride and groom were yelling at him. Finally, they deciphered that the bride and groom were telling Dewayne to ask Savannah to dance. So he did, so she said yes and they danced to Perfect by Ed Sherran followed by Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton while trying to get to know each other over the music. Following the dance, they continued to talk and dance together and by the end of the night, he asked for her number, she gave it to him, and they parted ways. The following Monday, he called her when he got off work and they talked for 3 hours. The conversation ended with him asking if he could come to Clinton that weekend for a date, and of course she said yes! Needless to say, the date went great and the rest is history.

The Proposal

Saturday October 22nd started as a fairly normal day, for Savannah anyway. For me, I was a nervous wreck, I had spent the past couple months doing secret trips to Memphis and hiding my text messages. All this secrecy was for a good cause though, I wanted Savannah to be absolutely surprised when I finally asked her to marry me. I really don't remember what early in the day was like, I cleaned house some and tried to not give anything away. I had told Savannah that we were going out for a fancy dinner that night so that I could get her dress up. So after a fairly mundane morning we left my house and headed over to Savannah's so she could get changed and look nice for dinner. This allowed part 2 of the surprise to get setup where my family, her family, and a couple friends all worked together to set up an engagement party afterwards. At Savannah's house I retrieved the ring from the shoe it was hiding in and placed it where I thought would be an easy place to get to in my car. Leaving Savannah's house we went out to the rose garden on Mississippi State's property to watch the sunset before dinner. At this point I am trying to be as calm as possible because I thought she was on to me. When we finally got to the spot and got out of the car I discovered that my "easy spot" for the ring was rather difficult to get to discretely. Somehow Savannah managed not to see it and we walked over to where I had picked out and I asked the love of my life to marry me. Thankfully she said yes and we got to spend the evening celebrating with friends and family!
