The Museum of Mississippi History and The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum offer a very thoughtful look into our state's past and present. We highly recommend these two if you're looking to learn more about Mississippi during your visit. Nick Wallace (of Chopped fame!) has a cafe on-site. Great place for lunch between the museums.
The home of civil rights veterans Medgar and Myrlie Evers was just made a national monument this year. The assassination of Medgar Evers in the carport of their home on June 12, 1963, was the first murder of a nationally significant leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, and it became a catalyst for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
You will have full access to the museum during our reception, but if you think you'll be too busy dancing to enjoy the galleries, we encourage you to stop by. The Picasso Landscapes exhibit doesn't open until our actual wedding day, though!
The home of great southern writer Eudora Welty is right in the middle of Jackson and open Tuesday-Friday for tours and visitors.
If you're bringing kids, the Mississippi Children's Museum is the place to go! Tons of fun exhibits and places for kids of all ages to play.
Another great spot for kids - or adults interested in learning more about the land and wildlife in Mississippi. Located right next to the children's museum, there's also a great new playground for kids to enjoy.
The legislature will not be in session, but the Capitol building and grounds are beautiful to visit.
This is where we got engaged, our favorite place to walk the dogs, and where Sarah spends every Saturday morning when she's training for races. It should be particularly beautiful in November with the leaves changing, so head up for a walk or a drive if you can.
Another favorite space to walk the dogs and get some exercise and a bit closer than the Trace. Plus, the start of the trail has one of our favorite murals in the city.
Another fun spot to to hike, picnic, and enjoy the outdoors. There's a disc golf course for those interested.
You can probably guess that we both like books a lot. We love our local bookstore Lemuria. A great local shop to find something to bring a little bit of Mississippi home with you.
This is where our welcome event will be, but it's worth going more than once. Truly one of our favorite spots with something for everyone: Fertile Ground Brewing (great brewery), Pulito (Italian restaurant where we went after we got engaged. Best Caesar salad ever. No joke. Reservation recommended.), Elvie's (all-day café highlighting southern farmers - delicious, but also make a reservation), Good Bar (outdoor craft cocktails, mocktails, & snacks) Mayday (ice cream!), and District Donuts (donuts, coffee, cocktails, and sliders). Plus there's often food trucks, live music, and plenty of space to sit outside and chill.
We are here basically every Saturday morning. If you don't need veggies, there are plenty of art vendors and things you can take home like jams, grits, and hot sauce. It's worth the trip just to get a croissant from Just Vanilla Bakes!
