Lainey Adams had convinced Sarah to attend the Avalanche Pride Night game. With the ticket package came the opportunity to go on the ice afterwards. Cassie was with friends at the same event, wearing a black t shirt that read "Stop Mansplaining Hockey To Me". Right from the moment they met, they realized they were going to be good friends...
Cassie was graduating soon and looking for work as a pastor, conflicted about trying to find a position in a church as a queer woman. She had a great interview in Missouri, but while texting with Sarah she decided to throw caution to the wind and let her best friend know that she would stay if she wanted... Sarah, obviously, says, "please stay."
Sarah wanted a public proposal, and started saying "center ice at an Avs game". Cassie took that to heart and began planning by reaching out to an Avs employee she knew. The employee passed the request to the game entertainment team, who supported Cassie's ideas and made the magic happen at the same event where Sarah and Cassie first met three years and one day prior.
Cassie, on the other hand, wanted her proposal in private, but in a place they could always return to together. Sarah scoped out a few scenic places to meet this ask, and picked an overlook outside of Boulder. She schemed with Nicole Jackson to fly out and join the celebration, including an engagement party for friends to attend in the evening.
