The Upanayam, or thread ceremony, is an important Brahmin ritual conducted by a priest that marks the transition into manhood. At the moment that the Janeu, or thread, is draped over Kartik’s shoulder, he has officially entered adulthood, entrusted by the Brahmin community to pursue his sacred duties, the primary one for Kartik being the ability to get married. During the Mehndi ceremony, the bride’s hands are decorated with a paste made of dried henna leaves, leaving a dark red pattern on the wedding day intended to promote health and good luck. The Sangeet, or music ceremony, is a pre-wedding celebration of music and dance that commemorates the uniting of the Sreepada and Carlini families.

The Haldi, or turmeric, ceremony occurs after the Mehdni ceremony. Haldi is applied to both the bride and the groom before the wedding as a cleansing ritual. After this, the bride and groom are not supposed to see each other until the Muhurtham.
