After weeks of talking on the phone we finally decided to meet. He took me ice skating, knowing I was terrified but convincing me I’d have fun. At the time, I had no clue he had played hockey growing up, but I should have known something was up when he brought his own skates. As he grabbed my hands he pulled me onto the ice skating backwards. Neither of us could stop smiling because there was an overwhelming feeling of comfort and happiness. He slyly says, "Oh yeah, I used to play hockey." I smacked his arm and instantly made him promise not to let me fall. But while Joe was showing off I tripped over my own feet, and as I prepared myself to land on the ice he caught me - I knew then that when he made a promise he would do everything he could to keep it. He might have stopped me from falling that day, but after our first date I was already falling in love with him.
We are terrible at surprising each other, but this day was a complete shock. Unknown to me, he already planned a double date. We met up with our friends, and were shooting for a couple hours when he suggested we go ice skating. On the way there he acted like he was inviting more people, (seriously this guy deserves a Grammy – we all know he can’t lie to save his life but I completely bought it) and when we showed up to the ice rink a group of our friends had already met us there. While we were skating, a friend asked Joe and I to take a video of her and her boyfriend - when they were done she offered to take one of us. We got half way around the rink when he made a comment about how I'd gotten better at it. "Let’s see you do it on your own" he said, and let go of my hand. Skating past me, he turned and slid to one knee with the biggest grin on his face as he asked, "Will you marry me?" My response wasn't appropriate to write...but we're getting married so I clearly said yes.
