We will be having 3 events at our wedding! The Sangeet, the Ceremony and then the Cocktail Hour+Reception. In Indian culture, guests typically change clothes between the ceremony and the reception however, we want everyone to do whatever is most comfortable for them. There will be time between the end of the ceremony and the start of cocktail hour where guests will have time to return to the hotel, rest, and get ready before the evenings festivities begin!
The sangeet is a traditional pre-wedding ceremony in Indian culture involving lots of festive dancing and celebratory songs. The bride, groom and various family members and close friends traditionally perform dances at this event!
We will be having a Hindu Arya Samaj style wedding. In an Arya Samaj marriage, the ceremony starts with the bride and groom chanting holy Vedic verses around the havan kund (holy fire). The garland exchange follows, in which the bride places the garland around the groom first, then the groom places a garland around the bride. In our case, as soon as Hindu ceremony is over, we will exchange Christian vows as well. Something to note is Indian wedding ceremonies typically last for an hour. Guests are by no means expected to remain seated the entire time. In fact, most people do get up and move around!
