Nantucket, MA

In 2006 our paths crossed on the island of Nantucket***

During the summer of 2006, Sally was taking in a beach day after a summer storm passed through. The sea was angry, but Sally decided to take a dip. Luck have it, Matt, whom some call a Nantucket legend, was just a few hundred yards down the beach finishing up his lifeguard shift. Sally's leg cramped and she quickly found herself in trouble. She yelled out for help, but no one could hear her. By chance, Matt heard her desperate screams over the sound of the crashing surf, and spotted Sally in between the breaking waves. He sprang into action, sprinted down the beach, and into the water. Matt cut through the Nantucket sea like a half mermaid half shark (a hybrid mermaid shark if you will), swimming like Sally's life depended on it...because, by golly, it did. He made it to her in mere minutes, which must have felt like hours to Sally, as she desperately gasped for air. Matt gracefully pulled Sally to shore just in time. She was in shock, but she couldn't help but notice how beautiful his curly locks were and how they glistened in the sun. Sally's friends rushed over to her side as Matt made sure she was safe. Suddenly, he realized he didn't even know this strong, independent, beautiful person's name. Without asking, Sally told him "the name's Sally, Sally Johnston with a 't' and you just saved my life". Matt felt there was something special about this one. He thought to himself, this is the type of woman that wins championships...basketball championships. As he walked back to his station, he looked over his shoulder and his eyes met Sally's. They both knew something incredible just happened on that Nantucket beach. They didn't know how, and they certainly did not know when, but in the bottom of their hearts, they both knew they would cross paths again...someday. ***We actually met randomly one night at The Box - but this is more us.

How We Engaged

Manhattan Rooftop Surprise

Before the summer of 2018, I surprised Sally on the roof deck of the Nomad Hotel in Manhattan. With the help of two key friends (one smuggling the ring from South Africa and the other securing the roof top), I was able to somehow get Sally to the Hotel without her suspecting the proposal. When we stepped off the elevator to the PH, Beyonce was playing, and we had the whole roof top to ourselves. Without waiting too long, I somehow managed to usher her to the side of the deck. Emotions took over, and I could barely put together my thoughts. Sally quickly understood what was going on. I can't remember what I said, but I believe Sally said "Yes!" After the surprise and dramatics, we entered the famous Nomad Cupola that was filled with candles and one single red rose in homage of the Bachelor. We sipped champagne and called loved ones in the solace of a beautiful Manhattan evening. It really came together better than I could have ever imagined!
