In March of 2017, our elementary school received notice that it would be closing its doors after serving students for 64 years. As alumni of St. Helen’s School, we were very active in all the events that were being held, in attempts to “save our school”. We spent countless hours together at events and fundraisers… this led to us spending time together after school, on weekends…basically any free time we had! April 1st, 2017 , about 3 weeks after becoming friends… we went to Roberto’s senior prom! Now this wasn’t the typical promposal or even prom day. Roberto had no intentions of attending his prom, he didn’t think it was that big of a deal. That morning, St. Helen’s had yet another fundraiser but this time, I did not attend… I chose to sleep in! Roberto and his family, along with my parents were all at this fundraiser, as well as our family friend, Araceli Nuñez. Araceli was telling our families how her daughter (bridesmaid Nadia) , was going to her senior prom and Roberto’s mom could not believe he wasn’t going to attend. So, Araceli suggested that Roberto and I go together! Now you may be thinking, how is this possible? We went to different schools, prom was that night, and I was still at home not aware of any of the plans that were being made. Well a couple hours later and several texts/phone calls, it was confirmed, we were going to prom! I got a dress, shoes, hair/makeup, nails/pedi and a guest pass and was his date to his prom! Since then, we’ve completed four years of long distance throughout a pandemic (facetime was our favorite!), while Roberto served as an active duty Marine in Maryland. Here we are now, 6 years later, finally ready to tie the knot!
