Daylight savings. That was the first conversation topic between Amanda and Riley over a dating app. From his office, Riley responded to messages about Amanda’s students being grumpy because they lost an hour of sleep. Riley liked that Amanda’s dating profile said she was a lifelong learner. Amanda still describes Riley’s decision to disclose on his profile that he likes Wikipedia pages as “interesting.” “How about a date at Salty Bear Brewery Co.?” Amanda said yes. Unfortunately, this was March 2020. They instead had their first date over a video call and did not go to Salty Bear until November 20, 2021. “Hi!” Amanda always started Zoom dates this way. Riley also remembers Amanda’s warmth. They discussed Amanda’s 90’s throwback playlist, Riley’s Harry Potter themed Vans shoes, answers to Amanda’s thorough questions, church, and work during the dates. “Let’s meet up!” After months of Zoom dates, Amanda and Riley met for a socially distanced date in a Trader Joe’s parking lot. They continued to grow together through beach days, handwritten notes, skateboarding, playlists, deep conversations, prayer, job changes, housing changes, and many other memories. “I just want to have a nice day together before the holidays get crazy.” Riley planned to propose on November 20, 2021 but needed a cover story. A “nice day” with a “secret dinner reservation” became that cover story. They finally went to Salty Bear and reenacted the first date, drove to Dana Point for the “secret dinner reservation,” and listened to a playlist that included songs from their relationship. Artists included Fleet Foxes, Kendrick Lamar, and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. They stopped at Salt Creek Beach before the “secret dinner reservation” and Riley got down on one knee. “Yes!” They were so excited to be engaged!
