Flight

Midway International Airport (MDW)

Midway Airport is our recommended airport if at all possible. This airport is well south of the city but has easy access to the interstate to get to downtown and the northern neighborhoods. It is appreciably smaller than ORD and has MUCH more success with on-time arrivals and departures. It also has a single terminal entrance which prevents confusion for pickup and dropoff. Average drive time to downtown Chicago/Lincoln park is around 40-50 mins but is much less susceptible to huge traffic swings. Pro tip: if you fly through MDW be sure to walk around the terminal if you have time to view the Battle of Midway (for which the airport is dedicated) Memorial and the preserved WWII fighter plane suspended within the airport.

Flight

O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

O'Hare is one of the largest and busiest airports in the country. Please be warned that if you are flying into or out of O'Hare there is a very high likelihood of delays. Please factor this in to any travel time you have calculated. In our experience the chance of delays is much lower for early flights before traffic and delays begin to cascade. Also, traffic on I-90 can vary wildly depending on time of day. If you are near rush hours (7-9am or 4-6pm on weekdays) expect HEAVY traffic. When arriving: if you are looking to catch an Uber/Lyft into the city please note that there is a designated rideshare app pickup location and if you do not go there rides WILL cancel on you. Paradoxically this area is up on the departures/ticketing level of the airport. After baggage claim you will need to catch an escalator upstairs to the ticketing area and go outside and follow the signs. Most of the apps will provide directions on how to get here. When departing: it is important to be dropped off at the terminal out of which you are flying as they have different security lines and they WILL kick you out of line if they view your boarding pass and see it is for a flight at another terminal. Average drive time to downtown Chicago/Lincoln Park runs from 25 mins without traffic to over an hour with traffic. On average it should be 30-45 mins.

Travel Note

Geography of Chicago

This is a general note about the geography of Chicago for anyone who is new to the city. Broadly, Chicago is a large metro area pressed up against the southern end of beautiful Lake Michigan. As such the lake acts as an unmissable landmark when navigating much of the city, it will always be on your east. The Chicago River splits the city and its neighborhoods neatly in half between north and south. It runs directly west out of Lake Michigan for about 1.5 mi and then branches both north and south. There is a scenic riverwalk on both sides of the river that we highly recommend for stunning views and good eats. Our wedding festivities will be located in the northside neighborhoods of Chicago (Lincoln Park and Ravenswood). The famous Lincoln Park is a seven-mile stretch of beautiful greenspace, ponds, zoos, and walking trails butted up against Lake Michigan about 5 miles north of downtown proper. The neighborhood we live in is also called Lincoln Park and stretches for several blocks west all along the park. Downtown proper is generally comprised of River North which is (as you guessed it) north of the river and the Loop, plus its sister-neighborhoods, which are south of the river. River North encompasses the Magnificient Mile and its famed shops along with landmarks like the Tribune Tower and incredible eateries. The Loop is so named for the central interchange of all the elevated train (the "L") lines which form a loop in the central business district. Beside it are South Loop and West Loop. On the eastern side of the Loop, between it and the lake, lies Millenium Park and the iconic Bean (technically called the Cloud Gate). In general we recommend new visitors to the city to stay in the northern neighborhoods of the city or the central downtown areas.
