We met at a very quirky Tucson bar on the first weekend of medical school. Even though our first conversation was over huge blue drinks in front of a giant plastic Tiki head, we were instantly charmed by each other. We were good friends for three months, but we were both hoping for more. Radu kept his crush a secret, Anna told her academic adviser about the guy in class she liked.

Our first date was watching the movie Ratatouille at Anna’s house. Radu brought eclairs and chocolate, Anna put on her best pajamas, Radu had on his favorite flannel, and Anna set up her laptop on the coffee table for the 9:15 movie screening. We just talked and talked and didn’t watch the movie at all.

On April 2, 2020, Radu brought Anna on a picnic along a trail of wildflowers, and he asked her to marry him. This day came after months of already talking about our wedding, our family, and the future we could only ever envision with each other. After our engagement, we went back home for a celebratory pizza on the couch where we had watched Ratatouille a year and a half before.
