We have talked with a man named Mr. Gordon who will be happy to help you. His number is 340-474-0090. However, if you are at a hotel, restaurant, or other location, there might be taxis waiting there or someone could call one for you! Remember, there is no Uber or Lyft on St. Thomas, so taxis are the way to go!
Carefully plan your trip beforehand, and look at locations on your way to the destination to place mental breadcrumbs for yourself! Also, if you drive long enough on the main roads, you will usually get back to somewhere you know, or to a gas station or store where you could ask. We recommend downloading the app “Waze” in advance, as it seems to work best of all navigation apps in St. Thomas. You can easily search restaurants, stores, and other locations. If worst comes to worst, call Tate (610-750-3169) or Rachel (610-301-7546).
Car ferry or people ferry. Check out this site for more information: https://www.vinow.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/ If you want to go to beaches on St. John, it would be worth it to take the car ferry. Also, if you are taking 4 or more people, it is probably cheaper to take the car ferry, since you would have to pay to park in St. Thomas and then pay for each person on the people ferry. When arriving in St. John, there is usually parking in Mongoose Junction and at the beaches.
Dress comfortably, thinking about the heat. The wedding is in an open air church at 3 in the afternoon, so it will be hot!
For ease, we recommend you park at the reception venue (Yacht haven Grande - there is a large parking lot). We will then taxi you to the church around 2:30. After the ceremony, we will walk a few blocks to board the boat. We will disembark the boat at the reception venue. Your car will then be waiting for you at the end of the night! If you would rather taxi home after a few beverages, we can call a taxi for you.
Nicer, but more expensive - Moe's fresh Market - one downtown, one in Red Hook More normal island shopping - Pueblo - close to Yacht Haven Grande
There is a lot near the police station, so if you search for that on Google, you should be able to find it. There is a fee/hr. during the work week, but it is not too expensive.
Hook bracelet, Larimar jewelry, artwork by local artist, Cruzan Rum (you can check it on the airplane with no extra charge as long as the store packages it up for you and you do not open it).
The car is a normal car, you just drive on the left side of the road. Have your car mates help you with constant reminders to stay left! Turning LEFT on RED is allowed (like normal right on red). When pulling out, remember to look right, left, right (instead of left, right, left like normally). Do not let crazy island drivers get to you. They will ride your tail, but let them - take it slow and stay safe! You will be fine! Also, a quick beep usually means a friendly thank you or go ahead!
Most places (hotels, air bnb's, etc..) will have a fridge with water in the door that is filtered, or will have a filter on the sink. Also, places might have water coolers to drink from. When you go out to eat, getting tap water is fine. It is all filtered. Don't let them convince you to buy bottled! Don't be "that" tourist!
Energy and water are valuable resources in St. Thomas. Electric bills are outlandish (price per watt compared to at home can be 5x-10x more). When not in the room, turn off the lights, fans, and A.C. When showering, try to take short, quick showers. Most houses run on rain water collected in a cistern. Therefore, no rain = no water. Just try to think about it and be respectful.
We have AT&T and it works great with no extra charges. If you have another carrier, just give them a call to check and make sure! Most are good now, but double check to make sure you don’t wrack up a massive bill! Also, when traveling to St. John, you may get a message saying you are “roaming.” To be safe, turn phone to airplane mode right away unless you need it.
Yes, normal US outlets, no worries!
