How We Met

January 2018

Rachel: On a cold and snowy night in January 2018, we were brought together by fate when we both found ourselves in a UMass basement for a beer pong tournament! I had just returned from a semester abroad in Peru and was anxiously standing in the corner trying to remember how to small talk in English. Gustavo, a cutie I had spotted winning at beer pong, was....shall we say...mid-tournament? When I finally got up the nerve to say hello, he told me his name was Gustavo but that I could call him Goose. I lied and pretended I hadn't seen him in my friends Instagram posts while I was abroad. Something about him give me butterflies. As the tournament ended, we decided to head out to a concert only to find it pouring down snow. I took off running, laughing through the snow, and the cute Brazilian followed. He grabbed my hand as ran to the next stop, steadying me on the slippery streets. I wondered if it was just me that felt something special. Flash forward six months and my friend Serena invites me to the beach for a "girls' day." Newly single, I showed up absolutely NOT ready to mingle only to find a... cute Brazilian lounging on the beach with all my ladies?! A setup! Six years later and he is still my favorite, cute, spontaneous, slightly rambunctious Brazilian. He still gives me butterflies and never fails to hold my hand when I need a little steadying. I will forever be grateful for my friends who set us up, and for that fateful Amherst night when the snow brought a little extra magic into my life. Gustavo: Amherst, Massachusetts. January 2018. A blizzard is hitting town, but we decide to make the best out of the night and embrace the weather, planning on going to someone’s basement followed by a concert afterwards. A friend and I team up and enter a beer pong tournament and our neighbors tell us they will meet us there to go to the next event. Unfortunately, after just a few rounds, we get eliminated. Bummed out, but still having a good time, we hang around waiting for our friends to arrive. When they bust through the door with beers, puffy jackets, and frozen faces, I recognize everyone but one girl. She is slightly taller than the others, has crazy blue eyes, and is wearing a big smile on her face despite just having trudged through the cold. I introduce myself, and quickly find out she is the long-lost roommate of our neighbors! She has just arrived back at UMass after studying abroad in South America, and as we chat I learn that she loves the outdoors, speaks Spanish and is easy to talk to. We hit it off and continue talking throughout the night. After a while we decide to move on to the next spot, walking through the fresh snow to get there. But the walking doesn't last long. A snowball fight starts breaking out amongst our friends and we take off running and gliding on the frozen streets! I grab her hand and start running, thinking to myself, “where have you been all this time?” Fast forward 6 months later and I have just graduated and am recently single. My friend Serena invites me over to her beach house in Gloucester to spend the Saturday afternoon chilling by the ocean. To my surprise, there she is again. We pick up right up where we left all those months ago on that cold, snowy night in Amherst when I followed her into the storm. Nearly six years later, there is no one I would rather follow or face through anything, than her.
