How we met

08-2014

Diego and Rachel both moved to Federal Hill, a neighborhood in Baltimore, to start dental school at the University of Maryland in August 2014. They had the option of taking a University Shuttle Bus or walking 20-25 minutes to school. On the very first day of dental school Rachel had planned to walk, but (and because of multiple factors completely out of her control) the very unlikely circumstance would have it that she was running late. She headed for the bus stop and just like a 90's romcom would predict - it was at the Federal Hill bus stop where Diego was already waiting. Diego was wearing Raybans (the Justin frames). "Who is this sultry brunette approaching the bus stop?" He thought. Unsure if it was a mirage or real life, Diego lowered his sunglasses as a breeze caught her hair and blew it back from her face in a way that marvels the likes of the great Beyoncé. After closing his mouth (his jaw had dropped open), their introduction was made. The rest is history.

The Proposal

12-20-2019

Diego surprised Rachel with the greatest proposal ever. Like, really surprised her. D and R had moved to an apartment in Bethesda and had been working in private practice for a little over a year. Some of their best friends still lived in Baltimore so they were always visiting the city. The plan was to meet friends in Baltimore (Fells Point) for dinner and then head to another friend’s house for a holiday party. When they were approaching Baltimore, Rachel realized that she had uncharacteristically forgotten something important - her wallet. Hearing this news, Diego remained impressively calm and collected, even though internally there was enough anxious pressure to cook 2 lb of frozen chicken breast faster than their instant pot. Diego parked the car surprisingly, Rachel thought, far from their dinner destination given that it was 24 degrees outside (feels like 7), however, she didn’t dare complain due to her (uncharacteristic and rare) slip up. Diego suggested that they walk along the harbor to dinner and Rachel happily obliged. This walk had significance to them because they would pass by the location of their first kiss (5 years earlier). As they approached said location, Diego slowed, turned to Rachel, whispered sweet promises to her, and asked her to marry him! She of course said yes! Dinner with friends was a hoax - Diego had already planned a romantic dinner at the Bygone for the two of them. At the top of The Four Seasons, it has one of the greatest views looking down on the Inner Harbor. They headed to the bar for after dinner drinks where Rachel’s mom, dad, sister, and close friends were waiting to celebrate with them. The night continued at a bar in Fells Point where the good ‘ol pass back with Rachel’s sister’s ID worked like a charm. Diego had one last surprise to close out the night - they would be staying at the Sagamore Pendry Hotel. Rachel re-lives that night in her mind to this day. She has never felt more special or more loved!
