In general we're going for bright, bold, fun, and most importantly, practical for the Costa Rican beach. It will be hot and we will be on the sand, so dress for the heat, and avoid outfits or accessories that won't work well on a beach (such as high heels). We're more concerned about everyone being comfortable than formality, so in general, the dress code is "beach casual". You likely already have something in your closet that would work great. Please stay away from t-shirts, tennis shoes, jeans, and tank tops, though. For women, a sundress with wedges or dressy sandals is perfectly appropriate. For men, appropriate outfits would include dress pants or khaki pants with a collared or polo shirt; tie or sport coat is fine but not required.
As soon as possible, but early to mid November is the absolute latest you should apply. Processing applications takes 10-13 weeks (expedited: 7-9 weeks), not including the 4 weeks for mailing time (2 weeks to Department of State and 2 weeks back to you). Processing times fluctuate depending on demand, and it's anticipated that they will rise, especially as we approach the busier travel season. Booking Link here: https://tinyurl.com/muf59bsm We blocked a wide variety of room types and two different time frames (4 days or 7 days). This is not locked down, though: if the room choices or dates in the block are not what you want, you can work with Sarah (the travel agent) to book what you need and swap out another room in the block.
Yes, while we recommend that you stay at the resort, we understand that you may want to choose another place to stay. You are welcome to do so, but please be aware that the hotel charges a day pass fee to access their property (including the pools, food, etc.). Fees (per person): Full Day $120, Half Day $85, Wedding Pass $90. Kids are 1/2 the price.
The resort provides offsite excursions! Here are some options: volcano rainforest and hot springs, zip lining, horseback riding, ATVs, relaxing river float tour, nature or rainforest hikes, national parks, white water rafting, exploring Costa Rican culture, and waterfall tour. Links: https://www.amstardmc.com/en/excursion/guanacaste. You can also explore Costa Rica without a hotel-provided excursion. Note that the hotel is somewhat remote, so it may take a little longer to travel to some of these activities.
Costa Rica is a very safe country to visit, the most prevalent crime being petty theft. Violent crime against tourists is very rare. Use the same good common sense and "street smarts" that you would use at home. Don't make friends at the bar and invite someone back to your hotel room; don't leave your drinks unattended; don't wander around in the middle of the night; don't flash a big wad of money -- use common sense.
The resort is an all-inclusive, which means that the price includes the room, food, drinks (including the bar), and generally in-resort activities/entertainment. There are several different restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. at the resort to choose from at no additional cost. More details on food and drinks here: https://www.amrcollection.com/en/resorts-hotels/dreams/costa-rica/las-mareas-costa-rica/dining-drinks/ Pricing also includes all taxes and fees as well as airport transfers.
Yes, kids are welcome at the resort and the wedding! The resort has clubs for kids (ages 3-12) and teens (ages 13-17) with activities daily from 9 a.m. – 9:45 p.m (kids) or 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. (teens). They also provide separate child care services for an additional cost.
The official RSVP date is October 1, but our travel agent told us that our resort is usually full. We recommend that you RSVP and book your room with the travel agent as soon as you're ready!
You shouldn't need to speak Spanish around the resort. However, it isn't a bad idea to brush up on your high school Spanish or bring a Latin American Spanish phrase book if you plan to leave the resort, especially to go on excursions or trips not provided by the hotel.
There are no vaccinations necessary for Costa Rica (unless you are coming into Costa Rica from a country where there is yellow fever - mostly South American countries). Good medical care is available everywhere with doctor's offices and clinics. Doctor's fees are reasonable so it's not a "break the bank" situation if you need to go to the doctor. The public health care system is available to tourists in case of emergency or accident. You may or may not be charged for this. If so, the charge will likely be small. It's safe to drink the water. There is a comprehensive country-wide water treatment system, even in rural communities.
Preferred Club provides exclusive access to the Preferred Club lounge and designated areas throughout the resort, an upgraded suite in premium location and enhanced room amenities. Generally there's no dress code around the resort, though some restaurants have them. The fanciest you might need to be is long pants or skirt and nice shirt. See the specifics here: https://www.hyattinclusivecollection.com/en/resorts-hotels/dreams/costa-rica/las-mareas-costa-rica/dining-drinks/
