Kola nut (oji Igbo) is the fruit of the kola tree, a genus of trees that are native to Africa; and holds particular significance in Igbo culture. The caffeine-containing fruit of the tree is used as a flavoring ingredient in beverages and is the origin of the term “cola.” Kola is the first thing served in every function or ceremony, personal or communal agreements, or welcoming of a visitor to an Igbo home. It symbolizes long life, peace, prosperity, happiness, and protection.
