July 2018: How We Met We met on a dating app called Coffee Meets Bagel. Sagar had been in Detroit for 5 years and Niki was in her third year of medical school. They matched on Niki's first night on the app! Conversation started by texting on the app, then we exchanged numbers, and after a few weeks of texting back and forth we decided to go on a first date. The rest of 2018: First Date and family meetings Our first date was at a local Tapas place within walking distance of Niki's apartment. The sangria was pretty good, the conversation was even better. We started spending more time together and realized we were falling for each other. He met Niki's family that October on her birthday, she met his family in California that Christmas. 2019 - 2020: Getaways, matching for residency, and a pandemic We both share a love for new adventures. Our first getaway together was to Chicago and we realized we both share a love for delicious food, escape rooms, and cocktail bars. Over the course of the next year we were lucky enough to travel for residency match interviews, family vacations, friend trips, and couple getaways. In the meantime, we enjoyed exploring Detroit and its evolving food + activity scene. Favorites include Maru Sushi, Detroit Shipping company, The Corner in Ferndale (started our love of board games), Jolly Pumpkin (great trivia), and Supino's pizza. Then the pandemic hit and it was time for Residency Match. 3...2...1, we found out we were moving to Atlanta for Emory! Spring (rescheduled to Summer) 2020: The Proposal We were separated for four months while trying to plan a move to Atlanta. Little did Niki know that Sagar had planned to propose, but instead ended up home in California so had to rescramble. Two days before their move, on June 6th, 2020 he flew into Detroit and proposed on the staircase of the DIA with her family there and his family on FaceTime. The rest is history.
