Picture this: the narrow halls of a middle school with no windows. Nicole visits her best friend, Danielle's, locker. Andy has flippy hair and basketball shorts. His locker is nearby. In desperate need of a date to the all-important 8th grade formal in a few weeks, Andy has an idea: ask Danielle's cute friend Nicole to the dance, even though he's basically never spoken a word to her before in his life. He pulls it off, sweaty palms and all, at the movies seeing Kung Fu Panda a week later. 11 years later on a sunny day in Charlottesville, hair slightly less flippy but palms equally sweaty, he asks her to marry him. She says "of course."
While visiting a small local vineyard on a trip back to Charlottesville, shortly after eating our favorite bagels from Bodo's, we had the entire deck overlooking the mountains to ourselves. Worried he wouldn't have long before other guests arrived and ruined the moment, Andy barely let Nicole take a sip of wine before he was on one knee. Claire, Andy's sister, arrived shortly thereafter to take pictures, and more friends joined for an ill-advised, celebratory hike up Old Rag in 90+ degree heat the following day.
