We are glad you asked! The Byzantine rite is one of several Eastern rites recognized by and in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. Byzantine churches are beautifully adorned with icons, and the sanctuary is separated from the congregation by an iconostasis, a screen covered with icons. Leavened bread is used for the consecration of the body of Christ in the liturgy (not called the “Mass” in Eastern rites), which is either the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom or that of St. Basil the Great. Communion is received under both kinds and administered by the priest from a spoon. We are so excited to share our liturgical tradition with you all, as it is the foundation of our lives.
They are certainly unique! There are multiple parts that go into the liturgy, which can seem like a lot! https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5180c403e4b05de3eed18564/t/52f6d3d2e4b0ec7646d008bb/1391907794303/The+Ritual+of+Marriage+_letter+size__complete_.pdf Check out the above link to get an idea of what our ceremony will look like!
All Catholics who are properly disposed are welcome to receive the Divine Eucharist. Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of the churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not permitted to receive the Divine Eucharist. The body and blood of our Lord are administered on a small spoon. Communicants approach close to the priest or deacon and remain standing. The communicants say nothing. They open the mouth widely without extending the tongue and close the mouth only after the spoon has been withdrawn.
We would recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before the start time of the ceremony. As this will probably for many of you be your first visit to a Byzantine Catholic church, and a Byzantine Catholic wedding, this will allot you some time for photos, and time to get the liturgical handouts that will go with the ceremony.
Yes! The church has a large parking lot, so no worries there!
Guests are expected to wear their Sunday best! As the wedding will be held in a church, the bride and groom are requesting that guests dress at the cocktail level (your goal is to look polished and put together without being overly elaborate)
We have a registry here on Zola, and we also have one on Amazon! Both can be found on the registry tab of our wedding website!
