Flight
Rio de Janeiro has two airports. The RIOgaleão - Tom Jobim International Airport (GIG) is a little further away (approx. 45 minutes from Ipanema), and the Rio de Janeiro Airport RJ Santos Dumont, which has only domestic flights, is 30 minutes from Ipanema.

Travel Note
For the most part, yes. The areas we're staying in (Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana) are safe with a lot of people walking on the streets and plenty of police around. However, you do need to be cautious about your surroundings. For example, it's not unheard of for thieves to steal loose phones off your towel on the beach or for motorcyclists to quickly grab phones from people using them on the sidewalk and speed away. Be cautious of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
