The story officially begins when Miriam went to visit her sister Jireh at graduate school in Savannah. But back at the beginning of her grad program, Jireh had mentioned one of her Catholic classmates to Miriam as someone she would get along with. Miriam thought it was sweet that Jireh was thinking about her while at school, but didn't realize the foreshadowing that was lurking beneath the suggestion. So when it came time to send someone to pick up Miriam from the Savannah airport, Jireh slyly sent this particular classmate, Adam. Miriam and Adam immediately fell into deep conversations, finding in each other a true “kindred spirit.” The weekend which Miriam had planned to spend visiting her sister was instead spent entirely with Adam, staying up late each night to share memories and musings. One such night, after exchanging original poetry, Miriam asked if Adam might send her one of the poems he had written, which led to Miriam giving him her number. Adam and Miriam stayed in touch over the phone, and sure enough, he made the drive to Dallas to visit her family and make things official. After clearing his intentions with her parents, in the living room of her house, he asked her to be his girlfriend, and their courtship began. Both have been utterly smitten with each other, mostly oblivious of those around them, and have found more hours than seems possible to talk to one another while being a long distance couple still in school. They couldn't bear to spend more than a couple weeks apart, visited each other frequently, spending time with both families, growing closer and hearts more intertwined each day. Finally, the graduate program came to an end, and Miriam and her whole family drove to Savannah for Jireh and Adam’s MA graduation. Their families were able to meet for the first time. After everyone had become acquainted, Adam asked Miriam if she would take a walk with him outside, despite the pouring rain, and she agreed. He led her through Chatham Square, to the bench where they had first told each other, “I love you,” and there he asked her to marry him. She dropped the umbrella and said yes. They returned with dripping clothes and beaming faces. After they are married, Miriam will move into Adam's home in North Carolina, near his family, where he works as a precision machinist.
