In 1999, Martin and Millicent both attended Miller Grove Middle School together. Martin played basketball and Millicent was a cheerleader. Martin claims he was infatuated with Millicent then, but she had no idea and paid him no attention. In fact, she doesn't even remember him from that time. Fast forward to 2004, Freshmen year at the Great Bethune-Cookman University. At the unmatched Bethune Grill (IYKYK), Martin spotted a short young lady in a Southwest Dekalb HS letterman jacket with the name "Millicent" embroidered on the sailors collar. He thought "there's no way this could be the Millicent from middle school", but he decided to call her name out. When he did she turned and it definitely was the same Millicent! He was excited but kept his cool. They exchanged numbers but because he had a girlfriend, they chose to keep it platonic. He introduced her to a friend of his and she and the friend started talking. Funny thing though - the friend didn't have a phone so whenever she wanted to talk to him, she would call Martin's phone. Then she discovered he had a girlfriend. Millicent was livid and told the friend to never contact her again. The friendship with Martin progressed and soon the relationship he was in dissipated. Millicent and Martin began their relationship and remained together until 2010 when they decided to go their separate ways. Shortly after Millicent found a life with someone new and got married. Five years later Martin and Millicent would find each other again after ending things in their respective relationships. It was as if they'd never left. Their families were familiar and their friends were rooting for their reuniting. Guess nothing can stand in the way of #GodsPlan
Martin decided he wanted to propose on his late father's birthday, April 10th. To make this happen, he enlisted the help of a host of friends and family. He knew he wanted it to be a surprise but he also know Millicent was very nosey so he had to be very careful. He asked their friend Ty to convince Millicent to go the nail shop. Ty, ever the over achiever, decided to BREAK a nail to aid in the convincing. He then got the help of his family via the family group chat. They planned a fake family photo session at Piedmont park. They discussed outfits for a few days and even had a real fake argument about what was to be worn; they had Millicent completely thrown off. The day finally comes. While on her way home from getting her hair done, Millicent's father called her asking her what he needed to wear. She says "huh?" He chuckled, told her never mind and hung the phone up really fast. She told her best friend Len about the weird convo with her dad and immediately, Len texts Martin to let him know what had just happened. Martin then calls Millicent's sister Tiffany to reign their dad in. Driving to take the photos, Paula, Martin's aunt, messages the family that the pictures had been canceled due to their being too much water on the ground from the rain. Millicent gets really upset because she'd been looking forward to taking the pictures. Martin tells her they can just go to Ponce City Market and do some walking around since they had time now. He tells her to put her heels on, and while she was confused, she obliged. They get up stairs from the parking garage and immediately go to this little park area with some seating. They sit for a while and Millicent's best friend Ty walks up with flowers. She's confused and asks Ty what she's doing there. Then Martin's friend Javoris walks up with a bottle of wine and after him, their friend Steve walks up with a small box.
When Steve walks away, their friend they've not seen in a while, Ryan begins singing "Never Felt this Way" by Brian McKnight (if you can't tell by now, Martin recreated the scene from the Proposal episode of Martin the TV show.) Soon after Ryan begins singing, their family surrounds them and Martin gets down and one knee and asks Millicent "Will you marry me?" Of course she says yes and the rest is still being written...
