It was October 2, 2021. The DC Oromo community was hosting the annual Gubaa, the night before Irreecha. Since coming to the US 6 years ago I was finally starting to socialize. I went to the event with my sister and brother-in-law. The event was pretty packed with people from all over the country. I was enjoying the scene, watching people talk and dance. Then I heard a beautiful voice. I turned around and this beautiful person with a beautiful smile was walking towards us. She opened her arms and said “my favorite people!” She was not coming for me though, sadly. She was coming to greet my brother-in-law and sister. They greeted her and then they introduced me to her. That is the first time I got to see her her eyes, her smile, her joy. That is when I started to be her favorite person in the world.

December 12, 2021 — first time talking December 29, 2021 — first date January 28, 2023 — Garumma proposed (Merertu said yes!) May 27, 2023 — the jaarsummaa (and engagement party). Our parents/families finally met each other! October 14, 2023 — the big day. We can't wait to celebrate with you!
