How We Met

December 2015

It is a thoroughly modern love story. Isaac was at work at his law firm. Melanie may have been at work at her law firm, but frankly cannot remember. Bumble.com presented pictures of each to the other. Isaac was enchanted by Melanie's beautiful smile and little black dress. Melanie was amused by the monkeys that Isaac posed with in Cambodia. They both swiped right.

Our First Date

December 27, 2015

On the cold and rainy Sunday of Christmas weekend, Melanie and Isaac met at Hudson Malone, an old-timey New York bar in the East 50s with strong and well-poured cocktails. Isaac thought, "Wow, she's cute", got nervous, and spilled said cocktails all over the table. Melanie thought, "He's short, getting divorced and wears weird Puma sneakers. He's also clumsier than I am! This could be something."

Our Third Date

January 2016

On a similarly cold day a few weeks after their first date (and a largely unremarkable second date), Isaac planned a Bachelor-worthy hometown date in his home borough, Queens. Melanie crossed a river (!) to join Isaac in Long Island City. The two visited the exhibits at MoMa PS1 and enjoyed margaritas and dinner at Casa Enrique (a hip--by Isaac's standards--Mexican restaurant). After dinner, despite Isaac's best efforts to continue the date, Melanie was getting antsy because she had already spent longer in Queens than ever before (that's right, longer than any extra innings Mets game or any flight delay at JFK). "Maybe another time," she said. "I have to go pack [on a Saturday night] for my upcoming ski trip [which isn't until next weekend]." Isaac thought he'd never hear from her again. Melanie worried she had messed things up by inventing a lame excuse and cutting the date short.

Dating and Cohabitation

February 2016 - August 2017

Luckily, Melanie and Isaac continued texting while she was in Colorado, and they started hanging out again as soon as Melanie returned from her trip. Six months later, they were "official." After another nine months, Melanie moved in with Isaac and his two cats...in Queens. Yes, you read that correctly -- Mel left her swanky apartment near Union Square and moved to not-at-all-swanky Jackson Heights, Queens. She was worried about having a longer commute to work and spending her reduced amount of spare time vacuuming up cat hair. Fortunately, Mel discovered that she and Isaac both enjoyed watching Game of Thrones (with subtitles), pretending to be annoyed by (and cuddling with) the cats, and making back-to-back-to-back plans with their friends and families (in places outside of Queens). It would have been enough--Dayenu! But, on top of all that, Isaac laughs at every single one of Mel's jokes (even the corny ones - especially the corny ones). A better foundation for a relationship, there never was.

Engagement

August 11, 2017

Back to Casa Enrique, site of their third date. Melanie spots Jake Gyllenhaal and admits that maybe Isaac knows how to pick a hip restaurant after all. After dinner, on the sidewalk just outside of Casa Enrique where they parted on their third date, Mel tried to make up for last time and jokingly asked Isaac if he wanted to continue the date after dinner. Isaac topped Mel's attempt to be funny by asking if she wanted to continue dating forever: "Wanna get married?" Mel was in shock. "Wait, what?! Married? To YOU?" After clarifying the basic details, Melanie said YES! She and Isaac continued their date at an ice cream shop nearby. Mel clumsily spilled her ice cream cone everywhere. The End (of The Beginning).
