Some of our favorite things to do up north:

Moomers Homemade Ice Cream

Free park right on the water, we love walking on the beach and the paved trail (also great for biking - Brick Wheels bike rental is nearby). Very close to downtown Traverse City, lots of shops and restaurants to explore there!

Clinch Park

Old hospital turned into boutique shops and restaurants with nature trails, fun place to walk around.

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

About 30 minutes from Traverse City (and $25 park pass) but well worth the trip! Great hiking trails (Empire Bluffs and Pyramid Point are popular) and near downtown Glen Arbor with shops and restaurants.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

So many options for this with 50 wineries in the area, either stop at one or tour several! For individual places, we like Black Star Farms or Hop Lot Brewing Company.
