Paul was a coworker of Meera Patel and K Liang. Meghan was close friends with Meera's younger sister, Sonali, from Rome Center. Both Meghan and Paul planned to attend Meera's birthday party on July 16, 2016. Prior to the party, the girls were discussing who would be there when Paul was brought up. The girls thought they would be a good match. While who spoke to who first is still up for debate, the two were inseparable the whole party. And sure enough, before the end of the night, Paul asked for Meghan's number. They began talking the next morning and had their first date the following weekend.

The weekend before Thanksgiving, Meghan and Paul went to the Chicago Botanic Gardens. They were walking to the Japanese Gardens when Paul suddenly got down on a knee and proposed. He had a photographer hidden to capture the moment. Paul also planned to have their closest family waiting for them at Meghan's parent's home to celebrate afterward. The day couldn't have been more perfect, minus the stomach flu that hit during their engagement dinner. Luckily, they were able to go back to the restaurant the following week.
