Megan

&

Timothy

October 12, 2024

Shelbyville, MI

Our Story

2013

Megan and Tim met as violin students at the University of Iowa. They were introduced by Andrew Gentzsch and Haley Leach in the Old Capitol Mall food court while waiting for the first studio class of the semester, as Megan was describing how she "went to a Marlins game for a dollar". Their professor encouraged Tim to talk with Megan about his violin setup, describing her as "blonde and organized", but Tim needed no further encouragement. They began talking on the Cambus Music Theatre Shuttle, between orchestra rehearsals, at Joe's Place on the weekends, but mostly in the Music West practice rooms and over Facebook Messenger. As a grand gesture, Tim sent Megan a care package of some of her favorite things, including dried apricots, over Thanksgiving break. They began officially dating just before Winter Break. Megan and Tim continued dating long distance for three years as Tim completed his Doctorate at Iowa and Megan pursued her Master's at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. They moved to Colorado in 2017 for Megan to pursue her Doctorate at CU Boulder while Tim freelanced. When COVID hit, they returned to Kalamazoo, where they have lived since August of 2020 and plan to buy a home in the summer of 2024. In addition to their private studios and orchestral freelancing, they have built a successful wedding and event string quartet called Kal-Haven Strings (named after the Kal-Haven bike trail, which connects Kalamazoo to South Haven). One of their favorite venues to perform weddings has been Bay Pointe Woods, and they cannot wait to celebrate their marriage with you there on October 12, 2024! When they are not teaching or performing music, Megan and Tim enjoy hiking, cycling, kayaking, yoga, game nights with friends and family, attending MLB and Iowa Football games, watching movies, traveling, cooking, and making cocktails.

The Proposal

2023

Tim plans an elaborate date-day for Megan's birthday each year, which has become one of our favorite traditions. After a busy January/February 2023, Tim promised to plan a "belated Valentine's Day" trip in the same spirit. The day began with breakfast at Megan's favorite coffee shop, Factory Coffee in downtown Kalamazoo, where they happened to run into their good friends Rebecca and Fahad. Megan and Tim developed an enthusiasm for vegan food while living in Colorado, so the next stop was Bloom Plant-Based Kitchen in Wicker Park, Chicago for lunch. They then visited the Garfield Park Conservatory-- which is a very popular spot for proposals-- and Tim curiously did not take off his jacket in the warm and humid greenhouse. After Garfield Park, they checked into the Sofitel on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. They took a walk down the Mile to Milton Lee Olive Park on the lakefront, where Tim proposed with the sun setting behind the skyline. They celebrated with dinner at Alpana in the Gold Coast, which was founded by the first South Asian woman and the youngest woman ever to pass the master sommelier exam. They topped off the night with drinks at the top of Hancock Tower overlooking the city.
