Transfer. This is OUR #1. We met here in the fall of '09; Nate behind the bar, Megan serving tables. Not only does Transfer dish out the best pizzas in Milwaukee, they offer a full bar as well as café, dining room, separate event space, and live music throughout the week. We've made life-long friends at this fine establishment. It is our favorite of Milwaukee's hidden gems. GET THERE!
If you haven't been, this is a great place to check out while in Milwaukee. There's a little something for everyone. Meg worked as a volunteer here, cleaning aquariums after her Divemaster training in Honduras; awesome way to keep up on scuba skills during the winters in Wisconsin!
This is one of our favorite places to grab a drink and a bite downtown. Located in the old Mackie Building on Michigan street, Swinging Door is an absolute gem. With its wood paneled walls and stained glass accents, it has the charm of an old 1930's tavern. The service is always on, and the food is always delicious. We like to think of it as our very own Cheers!
A very cool stop if you haven't been: the Milwaukee Art Museum is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, within walking distance of Discovery World. It is home to over 32,000 works of diverse art that span the ages, as well as the Burke Brise Soleil, or "wings" by architect Santiago Calatrava.
This movie theater is B-E-A-UTIFUL! Built in 1927 as a movie palace, it still features its original and intricate East Indian decor, and has since become a Milwaukee landmark. The Oriental was placed on Wisconsin's State Historic Registry last year, and now, almost exactly one year later, has found itself on the National Register of Historical Places! Fun Fact: while working at Transfer Pizzeria & Cafe, Megan volunteered (on behalf of Transfer) to help out during the Milwaukee Film Festival as a ticket-counter. While waiting between films, she killed time by counting the endless elephants adorning the theater's atrium; she got to 87, but there's definitely more.
