It all started out on one of the best days of the year, the 4th of July. We were down the cape with my family, and it will forever be one of the best days of our lives. My alarm went off at 6:30am for my early run before we headed to South Beach in Chatham to kick of the 4th of July festivities! The night before my Dad and Matt had planned to go get gas for the boat (or at least that's what they told me). They were actually going to pick up Matt's family at the Wequassett dock and bring them to the beach for the celebration after Matt proposed. I went in to see if Matt was up and there he was, lying on his back, staring at the ceiling. I was surprised to see him up at this hour, so I asked if he wanted to join me on my run! He of course, was not thrilled with that question, and he and my dad left to "go get gas." My Dad and Matt returned from their trip, we packed up the coolers for the day and headed to the boat. Matt had the ring in the box this whole time. While hiding the box in his bathing suit and keeping his nerves intact, Matt, for some reason, refused to sit next to me on our way to the beach. This makes a lot of sense looking back at it now. We all arrived at the beach and I tossed Matt a Gripah IPA to kick off 4th of July. He said his head hurt a bit from last night (if you've had one of my Dad's sea breezes, you know this is not far-fetched). I was frustrated with his response, so suggested we take a walk down the beach. Matt was very excited by this and knew this was the perfect opportunity to get that ring out of his pocket! The two of us took a stroll and Matt got on one knee. I ran back to all of my family and the surprise wasn't over yet. Matt's family walked down the beach ready to celebrate, as well. The sun was bright and there wasn't a cloud in the sky that day. We were surrounded by family and friends, and it was hands down the best day of our lives. The Cape will always be the most special place to us.
