We ran in the same circles for a few years in school (quite literally - we both ran track!) before starting to become friends in our junior year. When that absolutely classic high school event came around - prom - our mutual friends suggested to Ben that maybe he and Megan would enjoy going together. From the moment Ben waited for Megan at her locker one fateful morning to pop that first question, we both started to realize that not only did we make good partners for a high school dance, but we enjoyed each other's company doing pretty much anything. Our first official date was a walk at Webster Park, followed by ice cream and Ping Pong...we just kept adding on activities so the night wouldn't end. And from Webster, to Pittsburgh, to Buffalo, we've been inseparable ever since.
One Monday in February, it was an unseasonably warm day for Buffalo, and Ben suggested a bike ride when he got home from work. There were still chunks of snow on the ground, but we were both excited to get some fresh air. As we kept riding along the water, however, it was clear that the sun would set soon. Megan, not suspecting a thing, kept suggesting that they turn around before dark, but Ben was insistent that they keep going out to the pier. Megan might have been suspicious at this point, but Ben was wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt - nowhere to hold a ring for safekeeping. Or so she thought... When they got to the end of the pier, Megan turned to look at the sunset, and when she turned around, Ben was down on one knee with an open box that he pulled from his loose sweatpants pocket! Of course, we rode home in the dark, avoiding as many snow clumps as possible, but it was the happiest ride of our lives with a lovely new blue sapphire ring on Megan's finger (and safely out of the sweatpants!)
