Travel Note
Beaver Creek is a mountain town with an elevation around 8,100 feet (the summit is at 11,440 feet). If this is new for you, here are a tips for traveling to high altitude: 1. Stay hydrated! Between the altitude and Colorado's dry climate (see my next tip), it is easy to get dehydrated in the mountains. Be sure to drink lots of water before and during your trip. Salty foods and electrolyte drinks are also a good idea. 2. Protect your skin! The UV rays are stronger as you get higher up, so make sure to wear sunscreen if you'll be outside. It is also extremely dry up here--don't forget your chapstick or moisturizer. 3. Wear layers! The temperature can change drastically when the sun goes down, so don't forget a jacket if you'll be outside for a while. 4. Be careful with alcohol! Alcohol hits harder at altitude, so the same amount that usually gets you buzzed might get you hammered. If this isn't your goal, consider taking it slow until you know how it affects you (and drink lots of water!). 5. Eat more often! Your body burns more energy at high altitude, so make sure to eat plenty of carbs (and salt!) so you don't feel lightheaded. 6. Take it easy! The air really is thinner up here, so you might find yourself out of breath after doing something that's usually easy for you (like going up some stairs). Nothing to worry about, but maybe don't plan on any strenuous hikes until you've acclimated.
