On our way back from Cape Cod, Sean turned off the highway before Boston. McKenzie asked, "where are we were going?"...because she knew we had not been on the road long enough to be back. Sean brushed it off and said it was early and he had looked up things to do on the way back. The Scituate lighthouse had great reviews and knowing McKenzie's OBSESSION with lighthouses he figured we could check it out. When we pulled up to the lighthouse, we found it surrounded by scaffolding (obviously going through a refurbishment) which Sean had no idea about. We decided to walk down closer to the water, and then followed some ladies climbing up the rocks behind the lighthouse. As we climbed up the rocks, we came to a flat one with a large white "X" painted on it (no this was not planned). As we stood on the rock Sean casually said, "Well I guess X marks the spot." He pulled a ring pop from his pocket and McKenzie quickly took it from him. Very excitedly, but in a mocking tone she said, "Are we engaged now?" (Sean had always joked he would ask with a ring pop.) That was when Sean stuck his hand in his other pocket and pulled out a box, saying "Well I have a ring." Before either of us could say or do anything else McKenzie started to cry uncontrollably. Sean asked repeatedly if he needed to get down on one knee and ask. Finally, after asking about 8 times, McKenzie finally said "yes, you do". Sean got down on one knee and proposed and by then the women we had follow up the rock had noticed what was happening and were clapping and congratulating us. They offered to take pictures and thanks to them we have great "staged" photos of our engagement.
