Our First Date

It was August 20, 2015 and Paddy and Maya were supposed to get crepes. I say “supposed” because they never got crepes. The original plan for their first date was a cute outing at café le crepe in Austin. What better plans for a first date could one ask for? An adorable Maya in a floral dress drenched in the late summer sun meeting a dashing law student who talks too much. But alas, fate would close café la crepe that day and catapult Paddy and Maya into an improvised first date featuring actual improv (it was bad). Maya was the first to discover how fate had conspired against their cute date. Arriving at café le crepe Maya saw they were closed. Quickly, she flew into action and called Paddy. She let him know they had to pivot. Fortunately, the secondary plan for the evening was still on. Maya had invited Paddy to an improv show at the Hideout Theater. Paddy was en route and simply made a detour to arrive there on time. Maya sprinted from the café. She was late.

Did she make it?

...

The first time Paddy saw Maya she was gasping for breath outside the theater. She had booked it for seven blocks. The pair had coffee as they waited for the show to begin. Remember how I said it was terrible? Many people joke about how bad improv is. Few are personally attacked by it. For the aspiring couple, the breaking point was a sketch titled “Worst First Date” which featured a white man and South Asian woman having a terrible date. After that sketch, it was decided they should be elsewhere and fled in an effort to rescue their date and escape whatever message fate was hurling aggressively at them. Fortunately, their night was salvaged through people watching from the roof of Shakespeare’s on Sixth Street. They grew close through the shared fun judging other people from afar. Said people watching featured an out-of-place middle aged man in pink shorts, who they both agreed was up to no good, and several bands of youths making poor decisions. Their date ended with Maya meeting her true soul mate, Ash the dog, after driving Paddy home. And so began Paddy and Maya’s relationship on August 20, 2015.

For all the days along the way
