In June of 2017 Matt and Marisa were both living in Houston. Marisa’s group of best friends all worked at alliantgroup, where Matt was employed. On June 1st, one of Marisa’s best friends and co-worker of Matt, Victoria Patino, got promoted. In usual fashion, Victoria’s team planned a night of celebrating her promotion, and because Marisa was always considered an honorary AG employee, she was invited to tag along. Marisa almost didn’t attend because she was exhausted from working on her mid-year presentation, but decided she could not miss an opportunity to celebrate one of her best friends. When Marisa arrived at the bar, Matt had gone to get another beverage and when he returned was surprised to see a girl he’d never met sitting in his seat. As Marisa frequently tells Matt, she was quite irritated by him in the first few minutes of meeting him. As the night went on, the group made their way to La Grange, and Matt followed Marisa around all night. After forcing her to be his foosball partner in a game that they badly lost, Matt and Marisa found themselves sitting at a table talking to each other for the rest of the night. They didn’t run into each other again until August 12 at Matt’s boss’s pool party. This time Matt was successful in getting Marisa’s phone number and was finally able to ask her out on a date.

Everything was going well until October 18th rolled around and Matt was out with his co-workers after a Picaso inspired night at Pinot’s Palace. Marisa met up with the group for drinks (huge pattern here of Marisa crashing AG events) and Victoria congratulated Marisa on her new job in Austin that she had failed to tell Matt about. Marisa was freaking out in her head that Matt would be mad at her for not telling him, unbeknownst to her it was the best news he had ever heard: the girl he knew he would one day marry was moving to his favorite city in the whole world. It was an easy choice that he would move, and after a couple months of long distance Matt promised to find a job in Austin by June. In typical overachiever fashion, Matt moved in May 1st of 2018.

Matt and Marisa were back in Houston, the city they met in, for Thanksgiving. The Saturday following Thanksgiving Matt planned a brunch at B&B Butchers. Marisa was pretty suspicious that he was going to propose (probably because her mom kept happy crying anytime she walked in a room and Matt is incapable of telling a good lie). Neither person was capable of speaking or eating at brunch because they were both so nervous. This absolutely confirmed to Marisa that Matt was going to propose because when has anyone seen him quiet or not eating? Following the brunch, Matt had planned for them to walk down Buffalo Bayou and propose on the Jackson Hill Bridge. On the drive to Buffalo Bayou Matt received multiple missed phone calls and texts from Marisa’s mom letting him know that the secret photographer had arrived and that the bridge was closed for maintenance. Luckily it was a beautiful day in Houston so Matt had Marisa walk a mile further down the road to the beautiful walking bridge overlooking the Houston skyline. Matt dropped on one knee and asked Marisa to marry him. Matt further surprised Marisa by bringing her back to La Grange, where the two had met a year prior, to be surrounded by all their family and friends to celebrate their engagement.
